The Smoking Monk (by @coqtale)
- 1oz peaty scotch (I used Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength)
- 1oz green chartreuse
- 1 sugar cube
- 4 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
- Few drops of absinthe
Cover the sugar cube with the bitters and muddle in a glass. Add the scotch and chartreuse and stir with ice until all sugar is dissolved. Coat the inside of a second glass with absinthe, then strain the cocktail into it. Express a lemon peel over the top and rim, and discard.
This is a sazerac variation that is mind-blowingly tasty, created by the very talented @coqtale. For those who enjoy spirit-forward, complex, smoky drinks, this one is perfection. It’s super balanced, and smoky with just the right amount of herbal complexity. The sazerac is a classic New Orleans drink that in itself is a variant of the Old Fashioned cocktail. If you like Old Fashioneds, Sazeracs, and are able to appreciate some smoky Islay scotch, wait no longer and go whip this one up. If you’re missing any ingredients, get yourself to the store and pick up whatever you’re missing – these are all absolute staples in my home bar.
