Recipe
- 1.5oz gin (I used Raff Distillerie Bummer&Lazarus)
- .5oz Pomp & Whimsy gin liqueur
- .5oz Giffard grapefruit liqueur
- Couple dashes of orange bitters (I used Regan’s No.6)
Stir with ice and strain. Express the oils from an orange peel over the top and rim of the glass and discard. Drop in a syrup-soaked hibiscus flower and/or some syrup from the jar for color.
About
I’ve gotten a few new liqueurs recently, so time to experiment! This is an easy-to-drink cocktail that I would place in the Martini family. It’s fruity and complex, yet not as sweet as you’d think (especially given that lovely pink hue), with more flavors than my palate can easily identify (botanical lovers rejoice!).
The base of this cocktail uses the San Francisco-based Bummer & Lazarus gin, a delicious smooth and mellow gin made with California grape brandy. The fun part is composed of my new Pomp & Whimsy Gin Liqueur and Giffard grapefruit liqueur. Both of these are super unique and delicious.
The Pomp & Whimsy Gin Liqueur is a relatively new product on the market made in Los Angeles, and I’m very glad to add it to my collection. As a ‘gin liqueur’, it actually falls RIGHT between the two flavor-wise, with the classic flavors of a gin (slightly weaker at 30%ABV), but enhanced with notable additional floral, botanical, and fruity notes and a mild sweetness that is not overbearing. Imagine something like a gin version of a blanc vermouth or Lillet, but more citrusy and refreshing.
The Giffard Pamplemousse liqueur has been on my list for a while, and ok, it is MAGICAL. I’m a grapefruit lover (I peel and eat it like an orange!), and somehow they’ve been able to capture the essence of a freshly peeled (you know, when the peel oils are misting all over the place), perfectly ripe and juicy grapefruit. So if that description appeals to you at all, go and get this now! You will not regret it.
