Recipe
- 1.5oz gin (I used Botanist)
- .5oz kümmel (homemade)
- .5oz amontillado sherry
- .25oz orange liqueur (Grand Marnier)
Stir all ingredients with ice, and strain into a cold cocktail coupe. Express the oils from a large orange peel over top.
About
This one is for those of you who enjoy those spirituous savory cocktails in the Martini family. It is rich in flavor, yet not heavy at all with a light brightness thanks to a peek of citrus. This is an original recipe I came up with, but I’d say it falls under the style of drinks you might’ve found in the early 20th century.
The main thing I want to highlight in this is the use of kümmel. It’s a rare ingredient in modern cocktails, but is absolutely amazing for anyone who loves savory flavors (raises hand). It’s a liqueur made from cumin, fennel, caraway, and honey, and is really easy to make at home! I’ve never bought a commercial version, but my DIY recipe is posted here, and I highly encourage you to make a small batch, as even a tiny barspoon of it goes a long way.
