About

How do you jazz up your Negroni (without dramatically changing it by swapping out any ingredients)?

The traditional classic Negroni is equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari, and usually garnished with a slice of orange. Due to the intensity of the bittersweet Campari liqueur, the Negroni can be somewhat of a polarizing drink and an acquired taste. The template lends itself to variations aplenty, switching out the base spirit, switching out the Campari for a different amaro, and lots of unique infusions. Is it still a Negroni after all that? Sometimes questionable.

Given the vast variety in the flavor of different gins (the key definition for gin is just to have juniper as a dominant ingredient), your choice here obviously can have a dramatic impact on the final drink. Here I’ve used an interesting gin created from unaged apple brandy (instead of your traditional neutral spirit). Also, I love the Spanish tradition of combining a salty olive with a slice of orange as garnishes for a glass of vermouth – so why not Negronis too? 😉
