Amaro Meletti. Amaro is a classification of liqueurs (traditionally Italian-made) that are bittersweet, herbal, and complex, with flavors that are difficult to describe. They are traditionally drank after (or before) meals to aid with appetite and digestion. They’ve become an increasingly popular ingredient in craft cocktails in recent years, and you’ve probably seen it on cocktail menus even if you didn’t know them as “amaro.” The most popular example is probably Campari, but others I’ve commonly seen include Cynar, Averna, Montenegro, Aperol, Nonino, Ramazzotti, etc.
If you’re just starting out with amaro and looking to try something interesting beyond the basic Campari, I would highly recommend picking up this bottle of Amaro Meletti simply because it tastes amazing and is extremely affordable (under $20!). The quality of Meletti is completely on par with other more expensive amari (plural form of amaro), and the flavor is delicious.
Amaro flavors are difficult to describe due to the abundant botanicals that go into it, but to me this has heavy notes of orange, complimented by saffron, anise, and warm fall spices. It’s sweet but also delightfully bitter, a perfect representation of an amaro. Drink it on ice, with some bubbly, or sub it in anywhere you want some bitter complexity (it’s a great sub in Campari drinks). Don’t miss out on this affordable and amazing bottle!
