Good ol’ Bulleit Bourbon. If you like bourbon in any form or fashion, chances are you’ve tried Bulleit at some point. It’s truly a classic and standard in mainstream bourbon and for good reason! It’s delicious, affordable, easy to find, and comes in an attractive recognizable oval bottle! It’s my go-to bourbon for mixing most of the time, and also something I wouldn’t mind sipping on the rocks once in a while. No matter how many bottles I have in my collection, this is one I generally always keep around and fall back to (which is why I have this HUGE non-ergonomically-sized 1.75L bottle from Costco).
Contrary to what some people may tell you, bourbon whiskey does NOT need to be made in Kentucky (even tho many are) and can be produced anywhere in America. Alcohol legal definitions vary by country, but in the US, the only criteria for bourbon is that it’s made in the USA, from at least 51% corn, aged in new charred oak barrels, and distilled/aged/bottled at specific percentages ABV.
Recipe
Keepin it simple, everyone should know how to make a basic Old Fashioned.
Old Fashioned
- 2oz bourbon of choice
- .25oz simple syrup (dissolved 1:1 sugar/water mixture – you can also use a sugar cube if you want to make your life harder)
- 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters
Grab an old fashioned glass, add/combine all ingredients, then add some large chunks of ice and stir to combine. Gently squeeze the back of an orange or lemon peel against the surface of the drink and gently run it across the rim for that lovely citrus oil essence. (Note: if you choose to use a sugar cube, make sure you muddle it with the biters and a small splash of water to ensure the sugar is fully dissolved BEFORE adding the alcohol and ice)
