Chiang Mai Cobbler

Recipe

  • 2-3 slices of mandarin
  • 3 kaffir lime leaves
  • 1-2tsp of flavorful sugar (I used coconut palm sugar, but feel free to use brown sugar, raw sugar, or some other more-flavorful sugars)
  • 4oz dry sherry (fino, manzanilla, amontillado – your choice)

Muddle the leaves, mandarin, and sugar. Add the sherry, and shake well with ice. Strain into a glass filled with fresh crushed ice.

About

With the weather finally heating up, it’s time to bust out those refreshing poolside sippers that are low abv enough to actually sustain day drinking, yeah?

I recently went hunting for a Thai grocery store and found a total hole in the wall spot where they were selling bags of 50+ fresh kaffir lime leaves for $1! What?! Insanity. Kaffir lime leaves may be my favorite herb of all time, though can be quite challenging to find locally (my Whole Foods has it for like $3 for 10 leaves, but it’s actually also affordably sold fresh on amazon!)

Anyway, this is a refreshing treat built on the classic sherry cobbler template – read more about the history and composition of the classic here. It’s amazing how simple and versatile the template is – pick your sherry, fruits and herbs of choice, and accompany with sugar or some sweetener to taste. Lots of crushed ice and you’ve got the most refreshing treat you could ask for.
