Recipe
from Death and Co
- 2oz aged tequila (I used Tequila El Rey AƱejo)
- .25oz funky Jamaican rum (Smith and Cross)
- .75oz lime juice
- .5oz cinnamon syrup (1:1 sugar/water ratio, or if you use 2:1, cut quantity in half; see the homemade recipe)
- .25oz cane sugar syrup
- 2 orange wedges
- 1 dash orange bitters (I used Regans’)
Muddle the oranges in a glass (careful not to pulverize the peel, which will add bitterness). Add other ingredients and shake with ice. Strain into a glass with fresh crushed ice.
About
This drinks reminds me of an interesting cross between a tiki drink and a margarita. It’s tart and sweet but is fully backed by a strong flavorful backbone of aged tequila, funky full-bodied rum, and cinnamon spice. The overall flavor profile is tame enough that I think it’s an easy to drink concoction that most will enjoy.
One word about homemade syrups. Cinnamon syrup was one of my earliest posts from way back in March, and to be honest I’m still using that same batch today, which tastes and looks completely normal. I think sometimes there’s an impression that homemade syrups can spoil quickly and thus it’s not worth making, but I’ve been using this same batch for 9 months now, in my coffee, in tiki drinks, and wherever else I can think of. A spoonful of vodka helps with preservation.
