Coruba Dark Rum. This bottle here looks a bit silly and cheap with that colorful old-school label, but don’t let that fool ya – this affordable (though can be somewhat hard to find) bottle of “dark rum” is the perfect tiki mixer! Put away your Myers, you NEED this to fill your homebar tiki duties for a dark Jamaican rum!

This rum is super flavorful with no trace of weird artificial tones and still carries that fruity Jamaican funk. I wouldn’t consider this a “dark rum” for sipping on, but it is absolutely perfect for mixing in your rum punches and other tropical drinks! (doesn’t that palm tree give it away?)

Back to “dark rums”…as I’ve touched on before, coloring in rum means nothing, and especially don’t think that the darker the older (or better). A super long aged rum will usually only ever get golden/amber in color…certainly not pitch black. This rum falls into the category of a “black rum,” which is typically more heavily bodied and spiced with added molasses for both color and flavoring. Black rums generally aren’t aged longer than a few years and are best used for mixing (together with other rums with different flavor profiles) in delicious tiki drinks to add a delicious dimension of flavor.

Try a combo of 2 or 3 different rums in your next punch with a bit of citrus, sweet, and spice for a classic Planter’s Punch!
