About
Well the end of Negroni Week 2018 is upon us, but thought I’d sneak one last one in. This is the East India Negroni, created by Jim Meehan from PDT. It’s a rum variant of the Negroni, made using equal parts of a full flavored rum, sweet vermouth, and East India Solera sherry.
Sherry is a fortified wine from Spain, made in many different styles that vary from being light colored and not sweet at all (i.e. fino, manzanilla), to dark, thick/syrupy and super sweet (i.e. Pedro Ximenez, Moscatel). In the 1600s, sherry was a popular import to Britain, and the British East India company would take barrels of sherry on trade expeditions to the “East Indies” in Asia. They discovered that the journey helped improve the flavor of the sherry, and the post-trip “East India Sherry” became a popular treasured style.
Thus, the Lustau East India Solera sherry is made to honor and mimic this historical style. Already-aged sherry is blended and further aged in a particularly hot and humid environment, and definitely makes for a very unique and tasty product.
