El Dorado 12 Year Rum. Rum, a spirit that doesn’t get nearly as much recognition as it deserves. I’ve recently found myself on the rum obsession train, and there’s very strong reason for that! Check out the Rum Series series to learn more about rum in detail. Starting with the basics, at its core, rum is any distilled spirit made from sugarcane and its derivatives….including fresh sugarcane juice, cane sugar, and molasses. Unlike whiskey, which has a ton of enforcement around naming/classifications based on method and regions of production, rum has very few regulations of this type, making it one of the most diverse spirits in the world. As such, there is a TON of variation in rums, all with their own distinct (and delicious!) flavor profiles. Also, since aging of rum happens in warm tropical regions, maturation happens quicker (than whiskey as comparison), which gives rum a huge advantage in pricing (cheaper and just as good). Here we have the El Dorado 12 Year Demerara rum. Demerara rum is produced in Guyana, formerly Demerara, distilled from molasses and generally can be characterized as dark, smokey, and complex. This one is made of a blend of rums all aged at least 12 years and is very very good! It has a pleasing sweetness and is amazing as a sipper. So if you’ve always been a whiskey sipper, try out some quality aged rum and you might just find yourself a convert!
