Empowerment Punch

Recipe

  • 1.5oz red wine (I used a Zinfandel)
  • 1oz Pomp & Whimsy gin liqueur (you can sub your favorite spirit of choice)
  • .75oz Chambord black raspberry liqueur (or choose your own fruit liqueur)
  • .5oz lemon juice
  • Barspoon of absinthe
  • (optional) additional sugar/simple syrup to taste (depends on your personal sweetness preferences

Shake all ingredients with ice, and strain over fresh crushed ice. I garnished with a torched star anise over a raw sugar-coated lemon wheel.

About

I went to an amazing event hosted by the female-powered spirit company Pomp & Whimsy the other night, and I was so incredibly impressed and inspired by the team and the message they’re putting out to engage the female population with the world of spirits and cocktails. In this male-dominant industry, very few products are designed for or marketed to appeal to women (except for weirdly named or positioned items that really do not resonate with what a confident and strong woman aspires toward), but Pomp & Whimsy is out to change that. And what a damn great job they’re doing.

This is a fantastically delicious and unique 100% natural spirit that will appeal to any lover of floral, botanical, and complex flavors. And really it will equally appeal to anyone just looking for a simple deliciously refreshing drink. There is nothing “womanly” about this creation, except for the fact that it has the finesse of a woman’s touch and attention to detail.  Nothing jumps out or overwhelms the palate, and it’s just a super harmonious blend of exotic fruit, citrus, and herbs. Even though it’s labeled a “liqueur,” it’s really not that sweet and just a pleasure to mix in drinks or enjoy on its own over ice.

As for this drink? It was inspired by their recipe for a modern take on a claret cup (similar to a sangria or Pimm’s cup, which was a super popular cocktail in the 19th century), and wow, this drink went down way too quickly. You should probably double the recipe. Or make it in a large format #punch bowl. Forget sangria, this is your next party drink.
