Foursquare Probitas rum (“Veritas” outside the US). I am SOOO excited for this rum, a collaboration between the famed Barbados Foursquare Distillery and Jamaican Hampden Estate, two absolute powerhouses of rum production in the Caribbeans.
This “white” rum is touted as a cocktail-oriented rum (& thankfully also priced as such!) and is seriously a game changer. No additives, pure quality, and endless FULL flavor amplified at 47% abv. The Jamaican component in this rum (albeit low in volume) really takes this to Flavortown, adding in so much delicious fruity notes. There is 0 “alcohol taste” that you sometimes find in light, younger rums, instead coating your mouth with buttery richness and ripe tropical fruits…mmm!
“White rums” are a really poor category definition, as color has absolutely no indication on the flavor. There are white rums that are aged for LONGER than dark colored rums (charcoal filtered to remove color vs molasses/caramel additives to deepen color), and there are white rums that are almost literally a vodka (no flavor due to the high % it’s distilled to) while others have more flavor (aka esters/phenols/organic compounds responsible for aroma) than almost any spirit on the market in ANY category.
It’s a wild world for “white rum,” but pick up a bottle of Probitas/Veritas and you’ve got a bottle that will work incredibly to elevate any cocktail recipe calling for a “white rum,” AND it’s also so good you can sip on it straight. What more can you ask for? THANK YOU Foursquare for making the rum world a better place.
