Grand Old Fashioned

Recipe

  • 2oz Grander rum (substitute your favorite rum here, though be wary of sugar additives and stay away from spiced rums)
  • .5oz l’Orgeat almond liqueur (fantastic nutty flavor that is mild enough to let the rum shine through. You can sub traditional orgeat syrup here, but I wouldn’t recommend using amaretto liqueur as it’s a bit too strong in flavor)
  • (optional) 3 drops of Bittermens ‘Elemakule Tiki bitters
  • Angostura ice cube (or just add a couple dashes of Angostura with a regular cube and call it a day)
  • Lime wedge

Stir the rum, syrup/liqueur, and bitters with ice and strain over the fresh or Angostura ice cube. Squeeze in a small lime wedge and drop it into the drink to continue diffusing the oil essences from the peel.

About

Ah, who wants a delicious rum Old Fashioned? A classic Old Fashioned is usually made with whiskey, a bit of sugar, and some bitters (usually Angostura). Here, I’ve switched out barrel-aged whiskey for an 8-year Panama-made rum, sugar for some nutty almond liqueur, and traditional aromatic bitters for some “tiki bitters” (which is rich with island spices like nutmeg/allspice), and added an Angostura ice cube (just freeze about 7-8 drops of Angostura bitters in your ice).

This was absolutely delicious, 10/10 would make again. As the ice melted from the cube, the overall flavor profile shifted slightly, making it a super interesting drink to enjoy over time (if you can resist chugging it down). PS, this AMAZING cocktail pick is from Grider Co. Highly recommended – check their Etsy shop.
