Kamiki Japanese whisky. As Japanese whisky continues to enjoy its popularity amongst whisky aficionados, we’re seeing a host of new interesting items on the market! This exciting new whisky is uniquely finished in Japanese cedar casks, proclaimed to be the first of its kind.

With the soaring interest in Japanese whisky and a fixed supply (the high demand was not forecasted back when most of these whiskies went into barrels over a decade ago), we’re seeing prices for Japanese whiskies skyrocket, if you can even find it. While producers are finding ways to make old stock last by introducing no-age-statement blends, it’s also interesting to see other creative ways producers are bringing Japanese artisanship and character 🇯🇵 to the whisky market.

Kamiki is a great example. The whisky itself is a blend of Japanese whisky with whiskies from other parts of the world, but it uniquely spends a second aging cycle in indigenous Japanese Cedar casks. Oak is by far the most popular type of wood used for barrels across all spirits, and thus we tend to associate “barrel aged” with the flavors and aromas of OAK. However, different wood exhibit completely different qualities; while oak is heavy on vanilla, caramel, and baking spices, cedar is aromatic, woodsy, and cologne-like (it’s used in a lot of fragrances!). Thus, upon first sip, this totally throws you for a wild and fragrant ride!
