Lo-Fi Gentian Amaro. This is a classic California-made amaro that highlights the beauty of this region I now call home. I discovered this at the Craft Spirits Carnival earlier this summer in San Francisco, where I tasted all 3 of the Lofi products – sweet vermouth, dry vermouth, and this Californian amaro… all of them were absolutely SPECTACULAR and actually completely changed the way I thought about fortified wines and wine-based spirits because they all tasted so FRESH and light without being heavy bodied like many tend to be. The crisp wine flavors really shined through in all of these, and I was particularly smitten by the amaro, which eventually came home with me.
Lo-Fi is made in Napa, California, right in the heart of wine country. Staying true to its roots, this amaro is made with a white wine base, fortified by neutral grape-based spirits and has strong floral notes along with citrus, ginger, and a light berry jammy-ness. It’s brilliant raspberry wine in color (like its label) and has a light-bodied consistency akin to wine.
As always, amaro flavors are difficult to describe due to their complexity, but this is a fantastic liqueur that I would totally recommend seeking out if you’re ever in the area (or see it in your store)! This would be so incredible in light fizzy drinks (Lo-Fi Spritz anyone?) and just overall fabulous paired with crisp refreshing libations. The beauty and genius of California Wine Country in a bottle, what could be better?
