Negroni Sbaligato

Recipe

Add the Campari and vermouth into a glass filled with ice. Top off with the sparkling wine, and stir before drinking. Garnish with a slice of orange (and in my case, some smoked rosemary, because smoked rosemary makes everything better).

About

Happy 4th of July! May your midweek celebration be full of fun, friends, family, fizz, and flames! I know I’ve been pushing the Aperol Spritz over mimosas as the new “brunch drink,” but I’m sorry, step aside Spritz, you’ve been replaced by my new favorite daydrinkin’ fizz: the Negroni Sbagliato.

‘Sbagliato’ is a fun word, which translates as “wrong” or “mistake”…so “Wrong Negroni.” Surprisingly, I knew the word before I learned of the drink, as I do speak un po’ di Italiano from studies in school. Anyway, this aperitivo-style drink dates back to the 60s, where it was storied to be invented when a bartender mistakenly served a Negroni with prosecco instead of gin. It’s delicious and a cross between an Americano and a Spritz. My fav of that group.

For anyone wondering how to pronounce “sbagliato,” the ‘gli’ combination sounds sort of like an English “y” (tho it has no true English equivalent) or the Spanish “ll”…sba-ya-toe. Not perfect but hey that’ll get ya close enough to order one at a bar. Cheers to a fizzy 4th, and let’s hope this drink is the only ‘wrong’ thing in your lovely day.
