Recipe
- 1oz Plantation OFTD overproof rum (if substituting, use Hamilton or Lemon Hart 151)
- .5oz lime juice
- .25oz PX sherry (Alvear)
- 1 sugar cube (~1tsp)
- 1 dried fig (Valley Fig black mission figs)
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1oz tonic water (Q Tonic)
- Lime zest and fresh nutmeg
Cut up the dried fig into smaller pieces. Muddle the fig, lime juice, and sugar. Add the rum, sherry, and bitters. Shake altogether with plenty of ice, and double strain into a glass filled with fresh ice cubes. Add the tonic water and gently stir to combine. Use a microplane grater to zest some lime peel and fresh nutmeg over top.
About
Who loves dried figs? The jammy sweet fruit is perfect for the season to complement the sweet, buttery, and nutty spices abound. I got some figs in the mail the other day so into a cocktail it goes! This drink is perfect for that crossover period between the warmer and cooler months, deliciously warm yet very refreshing.
I couldn’t decide between muddling the figs vs infusing it, so ended up doing both. Infusions take a bit of pre-meditation to prep in advance, but muddling is so easy and provides instant gratification when desire calls. Fortunately the dried figs worked perfectly in this muddled creation.
