Recipe
- 1oz dark Jamaican rum (I used Coruba)
- .5oz Stolen Overproof Jamaican Rum (Plantation OFTD or a 151 rum would sub nicely)
- 1oz unsweetened pineapple juice
- 1oz fresh orange juice
- .75oz Giffard Banane du Bresil liqueur
- .5oz lime juice
Combine all ingredients with lots of crushed ice and shake well (or quickly blend). Pour everything into a large glass, and enjoy your paradise.
About
Mmm there’s just something awesome about tiki drinks served in bulbous brandy snifter glasses, yeah? It’s def one of my favorite tiki drink presentations. So, I just can’t get enough of the Giffard banana liqueur, which tastes like deliciously toasty banana bread. This tropical tiki drink is the Planet of the Apes, created by Beachbum Berry, and is so wonderfully delicious – both funky and fruity with magical banana creaminess. It goes down so easy, full of the rich sweet fruit flavors without being at all cloying (make sure you use FRESH orange and pineapple juices, otherwise you’ll have a very different drink).
A tip on preparing tiki drinks…a common way to make these tropical libations is to use a drink mixer/spindle blender/milkshake blender – this machine helps tremendously to rapidly aerate the liquid and produces a well incorporated, lightly frothy drink. If you’re like me and can’t justify such dedicated kitchen appliances, I’ve had really great results using my blender (Vitamix) for a very quick (2-3s max) low-speed mix with crushed ice. Don’t pulverize the ice!
