Skrewball peanut butter whiskey (liqueur). Guys – hear me out here and read this entire post. After trying this out in a few magnificent cocktails, I feel personally convicted to evangelize this outside of the CaliCool X Lifestyle X Fireball vibe the company has goin in their marketing – that’s fine, do your thing, but I’m obviously not that target demographic (so clearly this is not sponsored lol). Anyway, this is for sure a polarizing bottle. In my opinion, this stuff is awesome and it wasn’t until I read other reviews that I realized how divisive the audience is.
This is definitely a whiskey liqueur as it is rather sweet (and salty!), but it works FANTASTIC in cocktails. The peanut butter flavor is STRONG but in a natural peanut-y way. It’s not like peanut candy, but more like rich oily sweetened salty peanut butter. On the sip, the saltiness actually hits me first, followed by a long sweetness backed with a potent kick of whiskey that elevates this beyond pancake syrup territory (it is 35% abv after all)
A little bit will go a long way and it is so unique. I saw many recipes online that suggest using it on ice cream or with other cloyingly sweet liqueurs (Chambord, Baileys, Kahlua, Rumchata, etc) or even itself as a base; frankly, that all sounds extremely unappetizing to me and I can see how that could make someone hate this. That’s candy, not a cocktail.
Since this is already very sweet, I think its best use is to add a special rich oily nutty touch to spirit forward or bitter cocktails. Think: use it as the sweetener in an Old Fashioned with bourbon or a smoky peated Scotch, split it with sweet vermouth for a spicy rye Manhattan with an extra dose of bitters, replace the vermouth in a Boulevardier with Skrewball and cold brew concentrate, or add a splash paired with dry amontillado sherry and amaro. The flavor really pulls through as the perfect ingredient to add a savory touch without dealing with complicated fat washes. Check out some cocktail recipe ideas here!
