About
This drink is reminiscent of a whiskey version of the Allies Cocktail – a unique but rarely mentioned World War I era cocktail in the Martini family. This one a bit richer, fuller, and more mellow than its gin-based counterpart, but like the Allies Cocktail, really the star of the show remains the kümmel liqueur.
Kümmel is a cumin-fennel-caraway-honey liqueur originally from Northern Europe that’s actually found in quite a number of early 1900s cocktails (as well as some mid century tiki drinks!). It’s savory and dry, not too heavy, and rich with all sorts of complex spice. I can’t rave enough about kümmel – it is incredibly easy to DIY at home with ingredients you probably already have around, and a tiny bit goes a very long way.
