Stars in Hill Country

Recipe

  • 2oz Treaty Oak Waterloo Old Yaupon Gin
  • Barspoon of honey syrup (50/50 combo of honey and water – helps the honey mix better)
  • 1 dash of Honest John Bitters Co lemon cardamom bitters (sub with orange bitters)
  • Few drops of saline (aka salted water)
  • Smoked star anise

Torch a star anise for a few seconds on a heat-safe surface, and set a glass over it upside down to catch the smoke. Meanwhile, mix and stir together all other ingredients with ice. Flip over the smoked glass, add a large ice cube, and strain the cocktail into the glass. Garnish with the smoked star anise (or use a fresh one if that’s enough smoke for ya).

About

I am obsessed with this gin. So freakin good. This is a craft gin made in Texas, and since I’m a TX girl at heart, I couldn’t wait to try this out! Texans are usually prettyyy proud of Texas and well, everything from Texas.

To me, the prominent flavor of this gin is kaffir lime (aka my favorite aroma ever). Alongside that, there’s also holly, star anise, and it’s gently sweetened with honey. The gin is slightly sweet to start, made in the Old Tom style.

With the botanical profile of the gin as inspiration, I went for a totally winter-worthy Gin Old Fashioned. The kaffir lime freshness from the gin is super fragrant, and the honey balances it out so nicely. Smoking star anise is one of my favorite aromatic garnishes, and the smoke here works so well to pull out the savory notes in the gin.

Seriously, if you see this gin around, pick it up!
