Strega

Strega. Strega is a bottle I don’t see too often on here, and it definitely deserves more light of day! This bottle is aaalmost empty (sorry!), but this bright-as-a-sun yellow herbal liqueur dates back to 1860, created by a wine merchant in the town of Benevento in Italy. Benevento is famously known as the “city of witches” where witches from all over the world would convene to gather around the town’s large walnut tree for a rite of passage ritual, and legend has it that the recipe for Strega was given to the merchant as a gift for helping out an injured witch, explaining its unique name “Strega” – Italian for “witch.”

Folklore aside, the rich complex botanical and spice filled liqueur is made from over 70 secret ingredients, all natural with its bright yellow color attributed to saffron. If you enjoy herbal liqueurs like Chartreuse, Bénédictine, and the like – this is riiiight up your alley.

Flavorwise, Strega is most similar to Yellow Chartreuse with its honey-like richness. It’s a bit less medicinal and intensely herbal than Yellow Chartreuse with a lighter mouthfeel, all factors that make it quite versatile for mixing and less dominant.
