Recipe
- 1.5oz navy-style rum (I used Pusser’s Gunpowder strength rum; alternatives are Hamilton Navy, Lost Spirits Navy, or regular Pusser’s upped to 2oz)
- .25oz Kuma Turmeric liqueur
- .25oz Giffard banana liqueur
- Couple dashes of Bittercube Blackstrap bitters
- (optional) Couple threads of saffron
Stir all ingredients together with ice (including the saffron threads). Strain into an Old Fashioned glass with a large ice cube. Garnish with fresh lime zest (use a Microplane grater) and a couple more threads of saffron.
About
Wow, this is such a delectable drink. SO flavorful, and one to savor over a long period of time. On paper it looks sorta boring just like some Old Fashioned variant, but it tastes far beyond. It’s truly magnificent, showcasing the wonders of nature’s exotic diverse flavors.
This starts with a base of a very full-bodied navy-style rum. “Navy style” refers to the style of rum reminiscent of what British sailors received as part of their daily rum rations in the 1700s-1900s…this traditionally was a blend of rums from the British colonies in the Caribbean (Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad, and Barbados), offered at a “proof” that would light gunpowder – around 55-57% abv). The use of pot stills was common in these regions, lending to super flavorful rums that are a drastic departure from most “mainstream” rums available today.
Accompanying the rum is turmeric liqueur to add floral earthiness, banana liqueur for that hint of exoticness, and a few prized saffron threads…this really is an exquisite drink. So rich. So delicious. And bonus – it gets even better as you let it sit (allowing the saffron to work its magic).
