Recipe
- 2oz Doctor Bird Jamaican rum (if you don’t have this, you can try using another flavorful gold Jamaican Rum with a splash of Rum Fire if you have it)
- 1oz passionfruit syrup (I used Small Hand Foods)
- 1oz lemon juice
- Few dashes of Peychaud’s bitters
Shake (or quickly blend in a blender) everything but the bitters with crushed ice. Empty all into a glass and top with the bitters.
About
OK guys, this drink is based on the recipe for a Hurricane, but man this is not just a hurricane, it is a TYPHOON. The flavors in this are so incredibly rich and will make you ponder deeply about life and rum and savor every single sip. It is NOTHING like the gross atomic red syrup you’ll find at Pat O’Brien’s in NOLA nowadays, and is even beyond the level of delicious well-made natural Hurricanes you’ll find at solid cocktail bars.
The recipe is super simple and only really requires passionfruit syrup as a specialized ingredient. You can find artisan brands like Small Hand Foods from specialty liquor shops, but can also make your own using frozen passionfruit pulp found in Mexican/Hispanic (or sometimes Asian) grocery stores
That said, the secret to this amazing Hurricane in overdrive? A new rum has entered my life and it makes my heart sing. Thanks to @cocktail_adventuring for tipping me off on this one, the Doctor Bird is an aged flavorful ester-rich Jamaican rum that is finished in Moscatel Sherry casks at Two James in Michigan. It reminds me of a mix between Smith&Cross and Rum Fire (see prior posts for more on these). It is absolutely superb and newly launched on the market, so keep an eye out and if you see it, definitely pick it up! At only around $25, it is a STEAL. (I got mine from K&L Wines if you are in Cali or open to ordering online)
