Bumbo

Recipe

  • 2oz rum of choice – I went with a Barbados gold, Mount Gay Eclipse – Mount Gay is possibly the oldest rum distillery in the world!
  • .25oz rich demerara syrup (or 2:1 simple syrup will work too)
  • Freshly grated nutmeg

Stir with ice, then strain over fresh ice and top with freshly grated nutmeg. And you’re done. DELICIOUS!

About

This is probably the simplest drink ever that I haven’t tried until now, and wow, it’s definitely going in the regular rotation! The bumbo (sometimes also called bombo or bumboo) was a popular rum drink in the pirates era and the grand-daddy of so many rum cocktails.

In the olden days, you’d take a swig of rum with some water, and simply add sugar and some spices (nutmeg or cinnamon) to make it more palatable (we can assume the rum quality doesn’t compare to what we have today). Well, the pirates were onto something for sure. Today’s modernized take replaces the water with ice, but otherwise maintains the simplicity.

This is a type of Sling cocktail, a precursor the Old Fashioned-style cocktail.
