Death from Above

Recipe

  • 1oz 151 proof dark overproof rum (Hamilton 151)
  • .75oz full-bodied aged rum (I used Plantation 15yr Trinidad)
  • .25oz full-flavored dark rum (they recommend Cruzan Blackstrap, but I used 59% Golden Devil “Dark Overproof”)
  • .25oz Lustau East India Solera sherry
  • .25oz simple syrup (sugar/water 1:1 mix)
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 2 dashes orange bitters (Regan’s)

Stir all ingredients with ice, and serve over a big hunk of fresh ice. Garnish with an expressed orange AND lemon peel.

I’ve been wanting to try out this drink since my very early days of rum, but never quite had all the right ingredients. Luckily, the stars finally aligned. In general, I’m a big fan of boozy, spirit-forward drinks, and any drink that is potent and delicious (leaning on the drier/less sweet side) is a winner in my book.

This is the Death From Above recipe from the Death and Company book and is strong, boozy, and really means business. It’s *sort of* reminiscent of a Rum Old Fashioned, but is much much more. The citrus twists in this one are crucial to provide the added flavor brightness, and due to the potency of the drink, it’s good til the very end, with minimal negative impact from the melting of the ice.
