Hacking Whiskey

Hacking Whiskey: Smoking, Blending, Fat Washing, and Other Whiskey Experiments. This new book by Aaron Goldfarb from w&p design is fun and ridiculously wild (& slightly blasphemous at times ;D). It’s an easy read that kept me alternating between chuckling and wide-eyed shock every few pages. It’s a book you might want to read with a drink in hand, though even without one, I felt like I was getting drunker with each flip of the page, jaw-dropping over the outrageous ideas and photos.

With the population’s growing interest in whiskey (hoarding, collecting, and even the crazy “black market” for secondary sales), this book is a reminder that drinking is meant to be fun. From completely rational ideas like custom blends and infinity bottles, to fancier projects like DIY cask finishes using wines (and even Long Island Iced Tea!), things quickly escalate to completely bonkers tried-and-done ideas like ramen fat-washed Hakushu 12 and Pappy jello shots.

Craziness aside, the author is very well-informed about the subject and the content is like hearing your crazy but witty friend pitching ideas that are totally left field, yet get you thinking that it might actually work. Ultimately, this book really got me ideating outside the box, and for any home enthusiast that likes tinkering with creative ideas, I think this book will be a fantastic source of wild inspiration. Now, I may not be making bone barrow whiskey luges anytime soon, but I’ve got some smoked mint syrup and corn and butter-washed corn whiskey on my to-do list.
