Moscow Mule

Recipe

  • 2oz vodka (Kirkland)
  • .5oz lime juice
  • 1oz ginger liqueur (I used Barrow’s Intense, which literally just tastes like pure fresh sweetened ginger juice)
  • .5oz simple syrup (1:1 sugar/water) – adjust quantity to taste
  • 3oz sparkling water

(Alternatively: replace last 3 ingredients with 4oz of ginger beer)

Fill a cocktail shaker with crushed ice, and add all ingredients except fizzy ones (sparkling water or ginger beer) and shake. Pour everything into a copper mug and add the fizzy ingredients. Stir and serve w/ fresh mint and lime

About

I’ve been wanting some copper mugs for cocktails for quite some time now, and finally am the proud owner of these gorgeous pure copper ones from Old Moscow Mugs! My very first copper mug came to me under strange circumstances. I was at a Renaissance fair when a random man approached my friends and I and said he had a trunk full of copper mugs, and from there I acquired my first. I treasured that mug for years, using it to hold everything from pens to eyeliners, and finally when I got into cocktails, it was way too dirty and past its prime to hold my libations. So to celebrate my new copper mug, what better way to christen it than with a Moscow Mule!

The Moscow Mule is a vodka-based cocktail that you’ll often find served in a copper mug. This is partially a branding thing (same reason you’d want your martini in a martini glass) and partially utilitarian. The copper material helps insulate the drink and keeps it cold for maximum refreshness factor.

When purchasing a copper mug, pay attention to the material. Some are lined with stainless/other metals while some are pure copper, with pros/cons to both. Pure copper will provide the iciest, coldest, most refreshing sensation, but it is possible for copper to leach when combined with certain ingredients. Given that copper is naturally occurring in the human body, I really wouldn’t worry about this if you’re just having a drink in it once in a while. If you really are overly cautious and going more for aesthetics rather than the full ice-cold sensation, feel free to opt for a lined mug option.
