Rinomato Aperitivo

Rinomato Aperitivo. This is an aperitivo-style bittersweet liqueur that falls somewhere in between Campari and Aperol. While today’s Negroni-obsessed cocktail culture is increasingly embracing bittersweet flavors, I know there are plenty of people who’ve yet to develop a palate for the bitter viscous intensity of Campari, and while Aperol is absolutely delicious, it’s quite simple in flavor and sorta juice-like with its light citrus flavors and very mild bitterness.

Rinomato falls really nicely in between, championing the best of both worlds. With the same gorgeous crimson hue as Campari, it boasts a complex, milder yet still markedly bitter bite. Overall, it is much lighter in body and has quite a citrus-forward feel reminiscent of Aperol, bursting with the freshness of orange peels. Perfect just over ice with an orange slice, paired with some extra bubbly, or sub for Campari for a lighter and less intense variant on any classic.

Rinomato Aperitivo is made in the Piedmont region of Italy, where modern “aperitivo culture” originated. The popularity of the Italian happy hour (aka “aperitivo”) really took off in the 20th century and lives to this day. In Italy, during the early evening hours after the workday, cafes and restaurants will usually lay out a buffet-style spread of appetizers and simple dishes, all-you-can-eat for free with a purchase of a €5-10 drink – usually something refreshing and effervescent to open up the appetite, made with a bright bittersweet “aperitivo” liqueur. Can’t beat a deal like that!
