Recipe
- 1.5oz vodka (I used my favorite budget friendly option from Costco)
- 1oz fresh white grapefruit juice
- 3oz unsweetened cranberry juice (R.W. Knudsen Just Cranberry)
- .25oz homemade grenadine – both white grapefruit and cranberry are actually quite bitter/tart without being sweetened, so this adds in some pleasant sweetness and great color, and homemade makes all the difference
- Splash of prosecco or champagne
Shake all ingredients except the prosecco with ice and strain over crushed ice. Top with a splash of champagne, cocktail cranberries, and ‘sea kelp’ (aka dried hibiscus ;))
About
As part of #CocktailRedux, a fun Instagram event that presents modern takes on some of those “classic” mixed drinks you may have began your cocktail journey with, I present to you: the Sea Breeze. The very first time I started making cocktails many years ago and hosted a party for my friends (I really knew nothing about cocktails at the time outside of rum&coke, vodka-cranberry, and the sort), I crafted a cute little menu of things I could make and on it was the Sea Breeze.
Throughout the course of the night as I gradually tried all the cocktails on my menu, the Sea Breeze emerged as my favorite. The original recipe I used called for 1 part vodka, 1 part grapefruit, and 2 parts cranberry (can you believe I still have these notes? – and I’m pretty sure I used Smirnoff vodka and Ocean Spray for both juices. The Sea Breeze became my favorite cocktail that year, however suffered an unfortunate fate as it was somehow soon forgotten… I haven’t had it or even thought about it for many years now….until now.
