Recipe
by Kaitlin McGavock
- 1.5oz mezcal (I used Del Maguey Vida)
- .75oz dry vermouth (Dolin)
- .75oz Giffard Pamplemousse liqueur
- 1 pinch sea salt
- 3 drops Bittermens hellfire habanero shrub
Stir all with ice and strain.
About
“This cocktail suggests a saltier, more rugged approach than the dainty Papa Doble. Not a right hook to the jaw, but a refined insult that haunts you. Smoke, spice, salt, and crisp grapefruit sing like a distant memory upon first sip, tingling your lips and leaving you wanting more.”

I was browsing around for cocktails online (as one does) and found this little interesting one from Gary Regan’s 101 Best New Cocktails guide from a few years back. This drink was created by Kaitlin McGavock from Orlando’s Daughters & Co bar and let’s just take a second and admire her description:
Such elegant words, how could you NOT want a taste? This drink is called “The Old Man and the Sea.” It’s fruity yet smokey, with a light elegance from the grapefruit supported by a strong backbone of the super smoky mezcal. The saltiness lingers on the tongue for some added dryness.
